The type of paper used for difference purposes is expressed in weight. In the countries following the European system, it is grammes per square metre (gsm or g/m2 or simply g) and in the US system it is Pound (lb).
The paper used for writing/printing (letterheads and such stationery) is generally between 60 to 120 gsm (20 to 70 lb) and is called the paper or text stock. Anything heavier than this is considered the card stock, i.e. the paper used for business cards, postcards, greeting cards, etc.

What are the standard paper sizes?
The standard NZ paper sizes are from the ‘A’ range, with A4 being the most standard format used in business settings for documents, letters, etc. With so many paper sizes available in the A range, it is best to remember that the lower the number following the A, the larger the size will be. For example, A3 is larger than A4, whereas A5 is smaller than A4.
What are B paper sizes most frequently used for?
The printing industry most notably uses the B size range for the commercial printing of books and posters. They are used to describe both paper sizes and printing press sizes.
To put these sizes into perspective, for books, B5 is the most common and preferred printing paper size, and passports are printed in B7.
What is an SRA paper size?
SRA paper sizes are usually untrimmed, allowing for additional room for the ink to bleed to the edge of the paper. Once printed, SRA paper sizes will be trimmed to match the required A-size paper.
What is the ideal poster size?
The ideal poster size for both close-range and distance viewing is around 18 x 24 inches or A2 size. This size is suitable for indoor and outdoor displays, and we think it works for decoration and informational requirements. Information can be displayed clearly and arranged in a pleasing and eye-catching way.
What paper sizes are used for envelopes?
For envelopes, the standard paper sizes are called the ‘C’ range. Although not detailed in our graphics above, they are designed to best fit and accommodate A-sized paper products. The names for each C paper size correspond nicely with A size papers, as an A4 size letter fits best in a C4 envelope, and an A5 paper fits best in a C5 envelope.
